Gun rights activist Adam Kokesh to be released from jail after judge grants bond

Outspoken gun-rights advocate and Libertarian talk show host Adam Kokesh was granted $5,000 bond Monday morning and is likely to be released from a Fairfax County detention center this afternoon.

But his release comes with strings attached, as the judge ruled that he will be on pre-trial probation and cannot possess firearms until the completion of his case.

Kokesh was arrested last week and faced drug and firearms charges. He was originally held without bond after refusing to speak at his arraignment Thursday, a local ABC affiliate reported. However, a Fairfax County judge decided to grant him bond.

The former Marine and Iraq War veteran posted a YouTube video of himself loading a shotgun in Washington’s Freedom Plaza — where it is illegal to carry a loaded weapon — on July 4.

“We will not be silent,” Kokesh said in the video. “We will not obey. We will not allow our government to destroy our humanity. We are the final American Revolution. See you next Independence Day.”

Several days later, more than 20 SWAT team members descended on Kokesh’s Herndon home as police and low-flying helicopters barricaded the street. Police raided the house for five hours, and Kokesh was found with hallucinogenic mushrooms.

He faces up to 10 years in jail and a $2,500 fine if convicted on possession charges. However, if Kokesh is charged with possession of a firearm and drugs simultaneously, he could see at minimum an additional 2 years in prison.
