New Lady Gaga music video highlights campus rape

On Friday Lady Gaga released a new music video for the song “Til It Happens to You,” to raise awareness about campus sexual assault.

The song is the theme for “The Hunting Ground,” a 2015 documentary about rape on college campuses that has been screened at hundreds of colleges since its debut in January.

“The following contains graphic content that may be emotionally upsetting but reflects the reality of what is happening daily on college campuses,” a note at the beginning of the video reads.

The video was directed by Catherine Hardwicke, a filmmaker who is also known for directing 2008’s “Twilight.”

“I hope that this PSA, with its raw and truthful portrayals, will send a clear message that we need to support these courageous survivors and end this epidemic plaguing our college campuses,” Hardwicke said in a statement to the Huffington Post.

Scenes in the video include actress Nikki Reed being sexually assaulted in her dorm room and “Dope” actress Kiersey Clemons getting date raped after attending a party.

The video ends with the message: “One in five college women will be sexually assaulted this year unless something changes.”

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the song will be donated to organizations helping the survivors of sexual assault.

Lady Gaga revealed last year that she herself is a sexual assault survivor. She also teamed up with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to support an affirmative consent law that passed the New York State legislature in June.
