President Barack Obama promised the American people his administration would eliminate provisions making it impossible for them to keep their health plans. But those “stray cats and dogs” now include millions of Americans receiving cancellation notices because of his signature health law, a new video shows.
House Republicans released the video Wednesday morning slamming President Obama for lying to Americans when he said if they liked their healthcare plan they could keep it. The short video focuses on a speech Obama gave Feb. 2, 2010, in which he said the administration was working to eliminate a few “stray cats and dogs,” but assured Americans they could keep their plans.
“If you look at the package that we presented,” Obama said, “and there’s some stray cats and dogs that got in there that … we’re in the process of eliminating. For example when we said from the start that it was going to be important for us to be consistent in saying to people if you want to keep the health insurance you got you can keep it, and I think that some of the provisions that got snuck in might have violated the pledge. And so we’re in the process of scrubbing this and making sure that it’s tight.”
The video goes on to ask if the “stray cats and dogs” the President referred to were the millions of Americans who are receiving notices saying their current health plans have been cancelled — citizens like Cathy from Colorado, Amy from Ohio, Carolyn from Tennessee and Matt from Michigan.
Though the President in 2010 said his administration was working to eliminate those “stray” provisions that would lead to Americans getting kicked off their plans, he failed to follow through.
Since the rollout of healthcare.gov, millions have been told they cannot keep their current plans, and the President has come under fire for his lie. According to some reports, more than 5 million are expected to lose their plans, and in California, more than 1 million received cancellation notices.
Those are a lot of “stray cats and dogs,” Mr. President.
