Don’t Taze Me, Bro: Georgia legislator wants campus carry for stun guns

Campus carry doesn’t just mean guns — in Georgia, students might arm themselves with Tasers and stun guns.

A proposal that would allow handguns on campus failed last year, but State Representative Buzz Brockway introduced a bill to serve as a compromise between those who consider handguns on campus a threat to public safety and those concerned about self-defense, according to USA Today.

Stun guns tend to fall under university weapons bans, and the bill would override those prohibitions. Students have voiced concern that a lack of training with stun guns could make situations worse.

“It’s always a possibility of any device that it could be misused… but I think people who are going to purchase one of these devices, an electro-shock device, for their personal protection are going to use it responsibly,” Brockway told USA Today.

A new, high-stakes game of tag isn’t likely to sweep Georgia’s campuses.

Stun guns are seen as less-lethal alternatives to a firearm, though Amnesty International has documented more than 600 deaths since 2001 caused by them.

Campus carry for stun guns isn’t common, but a few colleges allow them. The University of Florida has allowed students to carry stun guns, so long as they have a concealed weapons permit. Salt Lake Community College in Utah also allows students carry stun guns and pepper spray.

If Georgia allows stun guns on campus, it will be the first to have a statewide law.
