The New Jersey teen who sued her parents for money to attend college was awarded a hefty scholarship from an expensive Massachusetts university.
Rachel Canning gained notoriety last month for attempting to sue her parents for child support and college costs after she moved out in an act of rebellion. But the Lincoln Park, N.J., teen doesn’t need her parents money too badly, as she was awarded a $56,000 scholarship to attend Western New England University, the New Jersey Star-Ledger reported.
“Decision made,” Canning wrote March 30 on her Facebook page. “WNE U class of 2018 BME Major w/ 56,000$ scholarship.”
Students pay approximately $46,154 per year to attend the Springfield, Mass., school.
Canning’s scholarship will be spread across four years, as her scholarship will likely equate to roughly $14,000 per year, the university reported.
“Western New England University routinely offers merit scholarships to incoming freshman based on academic achievement,” Barbara Moffat, Western New England University’s vice president for marketing and external affairs, told the Star-Ledger.
Scholarships, Moffat continued, range from $5,000 to $16,500 annually and last for four years. Students, however, are expected to meet specified academic benchmarks.
Canning attempted to sue her parents after she claimed they refused to pay her bills — if she didn’t obey their rules and break up with her boyfriend. In response to their orders, the 18-year-old moved out.
She claimed in court files that because she wasn’t an emancipated adult and was dependent on her parents, they owed her $654 per week in child support and needed to pay her private school and college tuition, as well as the cost of her legal bills.
Canning went on to drop her lawsuit and moved back home last month.
