Poll: French millennials favor Trump-like candidate

Bernie Sanders may have captured the hearts and minds of millennials in America, but across the Atlantic Ocean in France, Gen Y is loving a far-right candidate.

A new poll by Ifop for France’s National Association of Boards for Children and Youth revealed that Front National candidate Marine Le Pen earned between 27 to 31 percent of the millennial vote, the largest share among any of France’s major political parties.

Many millennials have turned their backs on socialism, having lived under the Socialist Party’s rule since 2012.

Some mainstream candidates like socialist Jean-Luc Melenchon and Republican Alain Juppé also received some support and can compete with Le Pen, but she is still the favorite.

French millennials said their most important issues included the economy, terrorism, and immigration.

The rightward shift is in defiance of global trends in the U.S. and the U.K., where millennials are voting for left-wing progressives like Bernie Sanders and fighting the culture war as social justice warriors.

Despite surprise that French youth are supporting a far-right candidate, it has been a growing trend since Le Pen took over the party.

In the 2015 regional elections, 34 percent of French millennials voted for the Front National, more than 10 percent higher than other age groups voting for the nationalist political party.
