Rep. Bruce Braley (D- Iowa) relied on the favorite Democrat attack line in Sunday night’s Iowa Senate debate against Republican candidate Joni Ernst, annoucing that she will “owe the Koch brothers everything” after Election Day.
But the line of argument was so weak that even a panel on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” couldn’t help but call it “ridiculous”
“This Koch brothers thing, it’s ridiculous,” host Joe Scarborough said. “Especially when they’re getting tons and tons of money on their side.”
Politico recently reported that the 15 top Democrat-aligned political action committees have outraised the 15 top Republican ones $453 million to $289 million in the 2014 cycle. So crying “big money” definitely seems hypocritical.
MSNBC’s Willie Geist said that the Democrat obsession with the Koch brothers has become a national strategy, but doesn’t seem to be resonating with the public.
“When Harry Reid goes on the floor of the Senate everyday and talks about the Koch brothers and it becomes a national strategy,” Geist said. “Does that work on the ground level of state races? I don’t know.”
The latest poll results would indicate that it doesn’t. Ernst is polling well ahead of Braley in Iowa and other polls are predicting a Republican victory in November in other tight Senate races.
“It doesn’t even work in Manhattan where people thank God for David Koch,” Scarborough said.
“If you go to the hospital for special surgery because you’re mortally injured you will be thanking David Koch,” Scarborough’s co-host Mika Brzezinski added.
The Wall Street Journal reported that David Koch has donated nearly $300 million to New York City medical and cultural institutions.
