President Trump created an awkward moment when he called out NATO leaders to their face during a Thursday speech.
“Twenty-three of the 28 member nations are still not paying what they should be paying and what they are supposed to be paying for their defense. This is not fair to the people and taxpayers of the United States,” Trump told NATO allies.
The scolding created what appeared to be an uncomfortable moment for other NATO allies, as they were seen sheepishly shifting behind the president.
Trump’s message to NATO alliance members was clear: the United States should not be bearing the burden of the world’s defense costs.
“This is not fair to the people and taxpayers of the United States,” Trump said.
