Bill Clinton is probably going to forgo his paid speaking engagements for a spot as first spouse in the White House should Hillary be elected in 2016.
According to NBC News, the former president told Bloomberg Television in a recent interview that he doesn’t “think” he will continue to accept money for his speeches, which net him around $500,000 each.
“I will still give speeches though on the subjects I’m interested in,” Clinton added. “I’ve really enjoyed those things.”
The 42nd president has caught flak even from his Democratic allies since defending his paid speeches during an interview with NBC’s Today last month.
“I’ve got to pay our bills,” Clinton had said. Since the start of 2014, Bill and Hillary Clinton have raked in upwards of $25 million for delivering paid remarks alone.
While Clinton now appears to be rather firm in his decision to stop the paid speeches, he seems ambivalent about the idea of stepping away from his involvement in the Clinton Foundation.
“That will be not an easy decision should she be elected president,” he told Bloomberg of giving up his post. “She’ll have to decide what’s my highest and best use, including being around to buck her up every morning.”
