Hollywood is with Hillary: Entertainment industry determined to defeat Trump

There’s no shortage of star power at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia this week, reminding us once and for all that Hollywood is for Hillary.

Between jokes from Elizabeth Banks, a panel with Lena Dunham and American Ferrara, an impassioned speech by Meryl Streep, a performance by Alicia Keys, and a star-studded music video of the DNC “Fight Song,” there’s little doubt as to which party has the most celebrity support.

Although it’s not unusual for Hollywood to lean left, this year the entertainment industry is particularly determined to defeat Donald Trump. More than 100 actors, producers, and musicians have signed on to a MoveOn.org campaign against the Republican presidential nominee, and refer to him as a violent, sexist, racist, xenophobic, homophobic fascist.

“We believe it is our responsibility to use our platforms to bring attention to the dangers of a Trump presidency, and to the real and present threats of his candidacy,” says an open letter from the group.

“Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston led the effort, and got over 100 celebrities to join the “Artists United Against Hate” pledge.

Other supporters include Mark Ruffalo, Shonda Rhimes, Kerry Washington, Neil Patrick Harris, and Macklemore.

They claim Trump’s rhetoric and policy proposals “exclude, degrade and harm” Mexican and Latino people, blacks, Muslims, Asians, women, refugees, LGBTQ people, disabled people, working class people, American prisoners of war, and “countless other marginalized communities.”

“We call upon every American to join us — to stand together on the right side of history, to use the power of our voice and the power of our vote to defeat Donald Trump and the hateful ideology he represents,” the group said.
