Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said the Obama administration narrative is wrong about the Arizona law and its policies on immigration.
“We are protecting civil rights and and racial profiling is not tolerated,” she said at the Values Voter Summit in Washington D.C. on Saturday.
Her speech comes on the heels of the June Supreme Court decision which upheld the controversial part of the law (SB 1070), which would require police to verify the citizenship status of people who are already stopped, arrested or detained. But the court eliminated the part of the law which maintains that the police can detain someone solely on the suspicion of illegality.
Two years ago, Obama called the law into legal question because he said that immigration policy could only be enforced from the federal government, according to the constitution.
In a written response to the Supreme Court decision he said, “I remain concerned about the practical impact of the remaining provision of the Arizona law that requires local law enforcement officials to check the immigration status of anyone they even suspect to be here illegally.”
But for Brewer, the real immigration problem is Obama’s refusal to put an adequate plan in place to secure the border.
She says her definition of right is looking illegal immigrants in the eye and saying, ‘you do not deserve favoritism’ and “[What is] right is looking President Obama in the eye, as I did, and saying, ‘secure our border,'” she said.
She called for Americans to refuse to forget about the Fast and Furious gun smuggling scandal cover-up and the fact that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is being protected by the United States Justice Department even though he was held in criminal and civil contempt of Congress.
Brewer is not intimidated by Obama’s high office and his ability to make executive orders in order to manipulate congress.
She is not backing down.
