A new Rasmussen poll confirms that at least half of Americans are paying attention to President Obama’s high-profile decision to provide amnesty to illegal immigrants under the age of 30.
According to a Rasmussen Survey released Wednesday, by a 2-1 margin Americans believe government policies encourage, instead of discourage illegal immigration.
Of those surveyed, 58 percent said they thought the federal government was encouraging illegal immigration. Just 24 percent disagreed with 18 percent undecided in the poll, which was conducted June 25-26.
The survey was coincidentally conducted on the day of the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down parts of Arizona’s strict illegal immigrant law, S.B. 1070, and the day following the controversial decision. The poll was likely a response to President Barack Obama’s recent decision to give amnesty to illegal immigrants who were brought to the United States as children, however, and a Rasmussen poll last week showing that 54 percent of Americans do not believe the government is doing enough to “identify and deport illegal immigrants.”
The results of the recent polls reflect a growing disenchantment with President Obama, who initially said he would not take executive action to side step Congress and the law.
The decision by the president to give amnesty to about 800,000 people in the U.S. is largely seen by conservatives as an election year political ploy. With so many likely voters opening their eyes to the Obama administration’s affinity for picking and choosing which laws it to enforce, Obama’s pandering to Hispanics could end up backfiring on the White House.
