Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) appeared on the Fox News Channel’s Huckabee to put into context comments by the Los Angeles Times this weekend in an interview with former Arkansas governor and host Mike Huckabee.
West criticized “white liberals” who try to tell black conservatives to keep their mouth shut about the political issues of the day.
“That is where the true racism lies, with the white liberals who don’t want to see someone such as myself that broke away from their dependency class, and is out here and able to possibly contend against them with the policies they are promoting that [are] destroying the black community.”
West’s comments came in response to an L.A. Times headline that read “America’s dirtiest job: justifying Allen West.” The story was dealing with how Republican national Committee Chairman Reince Priebus has to “justify” West.
“It’s demeaning to me, to think I need some individual to justify me and my existence,” West said. “The real racism lies with the white liberals who really don’t want to someone such as myself who broke away from their dependency class and is out here and able to contend against them with the policies that they are promoting that is destroying the black community.”
West also commented on how the 1964 “Food Stamp Act” has been so dramatically skewed from its original intent. He said that in many ways, food stamps are the “enslavement” of the American people, not the “empowerment” of the American people.
West does believe that there should with some social safety nets, but also argued that a net “should not become a hammock.”
