Poll: When Trump breaks promises and follows GOP establishment, his approval dips

After weeks of scandals about Russian collusion, late night tweets, and an endless series of leaks, President Trump’s approval ratings have begun to rise again.

According to a new Fox News poll, Trump’s approval ratings had a seven point swing. His approval rating now stands at 44 percent, up from 40 last month, while his disapproval is just 50 percent, down from 53 percent.

On the issues, voters have a favorable view of Trump’s work on the economy and terrorism, but have a high disapproval on two areas where he’s broken the most campaign promises and followed the Republican establishment.

The President campaigned on a more humble foreign policy, bashing both the Bushes and the Clintons for getting the U.S. involved in a series of useless wars. Despite his dovish campaign rhetoric, Trump has evolved and surrounded himself with war hawks that praise NATO and want more ground troops in the Middle East.

America has increased their involvement in Syria and has deployed another 8,800 ground troops to Afghanistan, a war that has been going on for 16 years.

These actions may be responsible for Trump’s decline on foreign policy, his approval rating dipped from 43 percent to 41 percent while his disapproval has increased from 49 percent to 52 percent.

Another area that Trump has flip-flopped is on healthcare, promising a full Obamacare repeal, refusing cuts in Medicaid, and wanting to negotiate drug prices with Canada. The President is spending every ounce of political capital he has on an Obamacare-lite bill that has been compared to Hillary Clinton’s failed healthcare bill in the early 90s.

Trump’s approval rating on healthcare stands at a dismal 36 percent approval and 55 disapproval, which is basically unchanged from last month.

Getting back to his campaign promises may be a way for Trump to improve his poll numbers, especially going into 2018.
