Trump trails McCain, Romney among millennials and women (that’s really, really bad)

Donald Trump may have higher support from African Americans and Hispanics than previous candidates John McCain and Mitt Romney, but he is trailing with women and millennials.

According to a recent Pew survey, only 35 percent of women prefer Trump compared to the 43 percent that supported the Republican nominees in 2008 and 2012. The survey also showed that while 38 percent of millennials backed Romney and 39 percent backed McCain, only 30 percent support Trump.

Gabrielle Jackson Bosché, author of “The Millennial Entrepreneur: Side-hustlers, Startups and Disrupters Restarting America,” believes that Trump could appeal to the female millennials who do not support Clinton because young women are the main group who struggle to connect with Clinton.

“Millennial women are having the hardest time getting ready for Hillary. Playing the woman card isn’t working for Hillary because she isn’t relatable. She tweets pictures of her family, and even compares herself to your ‘abuela’ in a desperate attempt to be real. It’s not working,” Bosché said.

Bosché believes that Trump needs to remind millennials that Clinton is “crooked” and he needs to focus on how to appeal to young voters.

“Trump needs to prove to voters we will be safer and have more opportunities with a Trump administration,” she said. “He needs more young entrepreneurs telling stories of what their life will look like with Trump in office. It can’t just be Trump’s vision for America, it has to be all of ours.”

Hogan Gidley, former communications director for Mike Huckabee, believes Trump could improve the numbers, especially if he focuses on the number of women he has employed and focuses on issues important to millennials, such as jobs.

“It’s all about jobs,” Gidley said. “Trump’s ability to create jobs and put Americans back to work again is a message that will appeal to millennials — who in many cases are graduating from college with a mountain of debt and no job to be found.”
