Following his perceived attacks on the U.S. Constitution and the Bible, CNN‘s Piers Morgan has been called many things — but who would’ve guessed ‘Freedom Fighter of the Year’ would be one of them?
Britain’s The Daily Mirror awarded Morgan with the honor in a slightly tongue-in-cheek year-end wrap-up. The tabloid cited Morgan’s attack on gun rights as the reason for his selection.
“The Americans are trying to deport him as a pesky Brit who’s attacking their constitution, but he’s also done something only an outsider can do which is point out a dreadful injustice,” according to the story.
The paper defended Morgan’s disrespectful attack on Executive Director of Gun Owners of America Larry Pratt and said the “Piers Morgan Tonight” host’s ego allows him to “shout, very loudly, that making the massacre of children easier is a very bad idea.”
But the basic premise of the article’s author ignores the facts. No one — not even gun enthusiasts — wants to make school shootings easier or more common. In fact, that’s exactly what gun advocates are trying to prevent by calling for more conceal and carry rights. Yet the article portrayed gun owners as “nuts” and “morons,” when the reality is that those “morons” and “nuts” are simply trying to protect themselves, other and the Constitution.
The worst assessment of Morgan’s ‘freedom fighting’ comes in the last line of the section on the host. The writer asserted “the freedom not to get shot when you go to school is more important than anything else.” Yet that’s an incredibly backwards and warped sense of the word freedom.
Freedom doesn’t mean abolishing all possible means of harm. Real freedom comes with risks, but it also allows for certain rights — such as being able to protect oneself from those trying to do one harm.
Seems like Morgan and The Daily Mirror have more in common than their British heredity. Neither one understands American freedom.
While the tabloid is way off the mark with its ‘Freedom Fighter’ winner, not every selection is ludicrous.
Singer Rihanna was also featured on The Mirror‘s list, given the title of ‘Idiot of the Year’ for getting back together with rapper Chris Brown.
