MRC president Brent Bozell lashes out at ‘moderate Republicans’ in CPAC speech

Brent Bozell, founder and president of the Media Research Center, lashed out at politicians that he considers to be “moderate Republicans” during his speech to the 40th annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Saturday, calling them out of touch and blaming them for last November’s defeat.

Among his many targets was Congressman Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.). According to Bozell, Ryan’s budget proposal, which was released earlier this week, should be classified as “Democrat Lite.”

“Do you have national aspirations?” Bozell asked. “Do yourself and your country a favor. Rip that budget up.”

Other House members that Bozell called out included Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for failing to repeal President Obama’s healthcare law.

“You’ve done nothing for over two years but give us excuses and more commitments that tomorrow, yes tomorrow, you’ll honor your promises,” he said. “Gentlemen, where promises are concerned, you are not what you promised to be.”

Bozell didn’t just lash out at those within the Beltway, however. He also lashed out at several governors – both past and present – including Florida Governor Jeb Bush and former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, both of whom Bozell considers to be out of touch with conservatives.

Outgoing Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell made the list for increasing taxes on the commonwealth’s residents.

“You ran, and won as a fiscal conservative,” he said. “You leave punishing Virginia with the largest tax increase in history. I wish we’d never elected you. Do you have national aspirations? Sorry my friend, forget them.”

Bozell saved his biggest attacks for former White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove, claiming that Media Matters for America has called him a ‘Voice of Reason.’

“The last thing the GOP needs is for the anti-conservative professional political consultant class infecting its ranks. And the last thing we conservatives want is them infiltrating ours,” he remarked.
