With only six weeks until the Texas Senate GOP primary runoff, the race between Ted Cruz and David Dewhurst for the Republican nomination is quickly heating up as Dewhurst has released an attack ad on Cruz for the large amount of out of-state funding that has been poured into Cruz’s campaign.
The video ad, which is modeled after the video game Pac-Man, attempts to portray Cruz as beholden to special interests and highlights the millions of dollars in out-of-state donations that his campaign has received from independent fundraising groups.
Cruz’s head is seen gobbling up various dots representing money garnered from Washington D.C.-based groups such as Club for Growth ($2,500,000) and the Senate Conservatives Fund, from which he received $600,000.
The ad ends with the lines, “Texas wins when DC insider Ted Cruz loses. Tell Washington it’s Game Over.”
Dewhurst has made attacking Cruz’s campaign donations a focus of his campaign.
Cruz and Dewhurst are both competing for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX.)
While the winner of the runoff will still face a Democratic opponent in the November election, Texas has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in more than twenty years.
Both candidates carry endorsements from very prominent conservatives, with Dewhurst receiving support from former Arkansas Republican Governor Mike Huckabee and current Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry.
Cruz has received a large amount of Tea Party endorsements, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Sen. Jim Demint (R-SC) and Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX).
