Bill Maher did a little throwback to the old days when he criticized the use of social media to complain about people’s political incorrectness because people have a right to be “a**holes.”
On Friday’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Maher made it a point to talk about the absurdity of the political correctness “gotcha” moments, especially in regards to homosexuality. The HBO host mentioned the simplicity of being politically correct over the Internet today and the heroism many feel by hitting the send button.
“In the ’90s, you had to at least get off your a** to be in a fake group with hurt feelings,” Maher said joking about the effort it took to start a petition and rally with signs. “Now, it seems all the Internet seems to do is point at the latest person who said the wrong thing, so the rest of us can feel morally superior.”
Maher referenced cases such as “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson’s stance on homosexuality, which led to the temporary cancelling of his show, and the sensitivity training that was ordered for Miami Dolphins defensive back Don Jones for publicly stating his disgust over the televised Michael Sam kiss.
Maher also encouraged the politically correct to think about the situation positively. After the televised interracial gay kiss during the NFL draft, “the culture war is over and we won.”
Robertson and Jones weren’t the only two who have been publicly shamed for openly stating their unpopular opinions. Earlier this year “Bachelor” star Juan Pablo shared the same kind of attack for disagreeing with the push to have a homosexual bachelor or bachelorette. One Direction star Liam Payne was also criticized, but not for speaking out against homosexuality. Payne was shamed for supporting “Duck Dynasty” during the Robertson scandal.
Maher noted that people have the right to be an “a**hole” and reminded the PC police that “you can’t purge everybody” who disagrees with one’s stance on an issue.
