The Federal Register’s regulations are eight and a half feet tall

Just how many rules and regulations are in the Federal Register?

Eight and a half feet’s worth.

The House Financial Services Committee (FSC) has produced a retro Halloween-themed short film, “The Thing That Kills Jobs,” starring the towering pages of the Federal Register styled as an economy-suppressing monster.

“Destroys opportunity!” the “trailer” flashes. “It wants to rule your life!”

The FSC had quite a time making the film—they had to carefully balance the unwieldy stack against a wall and quickly film their shots before the pages and pages of regulations came tumbling down around them.

It only stayed standing three or four seconds, according to FSC communications director Jeff Emerson, who estimated its height to be about eight and a half feet.

New editions of the Federal Register roll out every day, containing new rules, regulations, and executive orders.  The American Action Forum counted 65,000 pages total, Emerson said.

The FSC’s stack contains all the editions from January 3-October 22, 2014.
