Dog on ‘Downton Abbey’ might be killed off because of its name

It isn’t a good time to be named Isis, just ask this Italian chocolate manufacturer or the owner of Isis Bridal and Formal.

Now it appears that Lord Grantham’s labrador retriever on“Downton Abbey,” named Isis, is the latest to face the backlash that comes with sharing a name with a terrorist group, The Independent reported.

The dog might end up being killed off the series to help the public relations trouble that has erupted since fans noticed the curious connection last month.

An upcoming episode, previewed by The Independent, features Lord and Lady Grantham observing that Isis is looking “terribly listless” and might have “picked up a germ.”

Viewers of “Downton” know that such conversations rarely are as banal as they seem, likely pointing to the demise of the dog.

“Isis has been the Crawleys’ family pet since series two (2011) and was named after the Egyptian goddess,” a spokeswoman for the series told The Independent. “At the time the dog was named, and up to and including the majority of filming of series five, no one was using that acronym to describe a terror group. It is an unfortunate coincidence.”

They declined to confirm or deny what becomes of the dog later in the series.
