The Nevada DMV wants to arm its staff with semi-automatic rifles

Trips to the DMV are already a harrowing experience, with most people inches away from killing everyone around them. Adding a bunch of semi-automatics into the mix seems both a questionable idea and an unnecessary use of scarce resources–but the Nevada DMV is all about it.

The Nevada DMV requested funding to buy 12 semi-automatic rifles for its security staff, according to local NPR station KNPR. Security agents already have handguns, but the DMV says semi-automatics are more accurate and therefore can more safely protect its staff from the “prevalent” handgun-bearing citizens of the state.

“Handguns and firearms are prevalent in the state of Nevada,” said deputy administrator Sterling Nixon. “We lean toward protecting the public with whatever means we have.”

The rifles would be part of an “Active Shooter Program,” which would prepare DMV staff for the event of an armed intruder.

Oh and in case you’re wondering, here’s a recent screenshot of live wait times from the Nevada DMV’s website:

Expensive, high-powered rifles definitely seem like the best use of government resources!
