Latino one-hit wonder Ricky Martin slammed presidential hopeful Donald Trump on Twitter Thursday over the billionaire’s comments on immigrants from Mexico.
“There’s much hatred and ignorance in your heart @realDonaldTrump #LatinosUnidos,” tweeted Martin.
The singer is referring to Trump’s remarks that Mexican immigrants bring drugs, crime, and rapists.
Martin is not the only high-profile Hispanic to slam Trump. Colombian Reggaeton singer J Balvin canceled his Miss USA performance, since the presidential candidate holds a stake in the beauty pageant. Chilean actor Cristian de la Fuente also decided to quit on this year’s Miss USA pageant, which he was scheduled to host.
The largest Spanish-language broadcaster Univision said Thursday that it will not broadcast the July 12 telecast of Miss USA.
Trump said that he plans on suing Univision for breaking their contract, and he is speaking to his lawyers. He and his daughter Ivanka slammed the media for taking his words out of context.
“He was talking about illegal immigration, and a porous border between the U.S. and Mexico; he wasn’t talking about the Mexican people. He was talking about people coming across the border illegally and so it was very sad for me to see that that message was totally taken out of context and the mainstream media really ran with it,” Ivanka said to CNN.
Donald also scolded the media.
“I am personally offended by the mainstream media’s attempt to distort my comments regarding Mexico and its great people. I have many successful business relationships with Mexican companies and employ, and am close friends with, many Mexican people. I also have tremendous respect for the leaders of Mexico, who, frankly, are much smarter and tougher than our politicians here in the United States,” Donald said in a statement.
