Costa Rica officially has the worst taste in alcoholic beverages on the globe.
The Washington Post came out with a fun infographic based on data from the market research firm Euromonitor that exposes the countries where the most Smirnoff Ice is consumed.
Yes, that’s right: Smirnoff Ice, “The original premium flavored malt beverage … with a delightfully crisp, citrus taste,” or as sane people call it, “disgusting.”
According to the data, the biggests fans of the gag-inducing sugary beverage are found in Costa Rica, where the per capita consumption of the drink is almost 17 ounces. That figures out to one and a half bottles per individual in Costa Rica each year.
Costa Rica is followed by New Zealand, Canada, Australia and — yes — the United States.
Individuals in the United States purchased an incredible and embarrassing 300 million bottles of Smirnoff Ice in 2013. That’s about 12 ounces — or one bottle — per American.
Finland has the most commendably low Ice consumption, with each individual drinking about two ounces yearly.
Perhaps high consumption rates are directly related to trends in “icing.”
Urban Dictionary has a pretty good description of the game: “If a person sees a Smirnoff Ice, he or she must get down on one knee and chug it, unless they happen to be carrying their own Smirnoff, in which case they can ‘ice block,’ or refract the punishment back onto the attacker. In order to dupe people into stumbling across the beverage, participants have devised creative ways of presenting them with Ices, like strapping the bottles to the backs of dogs or burying them in vats of protein powder.”
Despite the “icing” trend, sales of Smirnoff Ice have declined 22 percent worldwide since 2004. The United States in particular has seen a 52 percent decline in sales of the beverage since the high point of its popularity in 2006.
However, sales in Costa Rica are increasing.
A word of wisdom to those currently uncapping a Smirnoff Ice: Freeze, and drop that drink in the trash.
