Rednecks everywhere are up in arms after a new decision by Walmart and Sears to stop selling Confederate flags.
It’s sad, but true that there’s only one thing I can say to the dozens of you who won’t be able to buy mass produced symbols of Southern heritage at some of the world’s largest retailers: You’re going to have to buy products that are actually made in America — possibly by hand — if you want to offend other Americans.
Yep, MSNBC confirmed that Walmart is done with the Confederacy — or at least its flags. That means no more flags, no more t-shirts, no more belt buckles, no more decals — no more confederate flag images period. Sears followed suit, according to Reuters ,and is no longer allowing third parties to sell Confederate flag items on its website.
“We never want to offend anyone with the products that we offer,” Walmart said in a statement released Monday. “We have taken steps to remove all items promoting the confederate flag from our assortment — whether in our stores or on our web site. We have a process in place to help lead us to the right decisions when it comes to the merchandise we sell. Still, at times, items make their way into our assortment improperly — this is one of those instances.”
The decision follows a choice by South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to stop waving the flag at the capitol building. In the same vein, President Obama said that racism is still an issue in this country, after a white man recently shot and killed nine black people in South Carolina, adding to the discussion about racism.
But we will rebuild. Not every Southerner is a racist, and not every Confederate flag serves as a reminder of it.
Today we say goodbye to an emblem of Southern heritage (not pictured).
