Some comedians have found plenty of humorous material in President Obama’s speeches. Obama’s use of a teleprompter, constant self-references and boring style have been the basis of quite a few jokes, but the Danish program Detektor has pointed out another possible source of mockery: Obama has consistently used the same exact rhetoric to praise different countries while their leaders were visiting the White House.
The television show ingeniously combines several clips where the president describes the Danish, Ireland, Norway, the Netherlands and the Phillipines as all “punching above their weight.” The program also points out the fact that Obama described numerous countries as “one of our strongest allies.” It would seem that a compliment has less meaning when it is repeated so often to various parties.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time the president has been mocked for repetitive use of the same rhetoric. The Republican National Committee released a video following Obama’s last State of the Union that highlighted his tendency to reuse exact phrases from previous years.
As the Danish host suggests, “maybe the copy key got stuck on the presidential speechwriter’s keyboard”? Or perhaps he just needs a thesaurus.
