It was better late than never for former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton to debut her stance on gay marriage on Monday.
She announced her support for same-sex marriage via a video by the gay rights advocacy group Human Rights Campaign.
“L.G.B.T. Americans are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones, and they are full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship,” she said in the video. “That includes marriage.”
The former presidential candidate is changing her position from 2008 when she said she believed in civil unions but thought gay marriage was a decision for the states. However, her recent announcement is not surprising considering she supported New York’s gay marriage law in 2011.
“I believe America is at its best when we champion the freedom and dignity of every human being,’’ she said in the six-minute video.
While Clinton has stepped down as Secretary of State, many Democrats are gunning for Clinton to run for president in 2016 and this recent announcement only seems to confirm suspicions that she wants to return to the White House as well — but this time not as the First Lady.
Other potential Democratic candidates, including Vice-President Joe Biden, have already announced their support for gay marriage. In fact, Biden’s public support of the policy is what led the current White House to openly and actively being supping gay marriage in the first place.
A recent Gallup poll revealed that 53 percent of Americans support gay marriage versus 46 percent who are against it.
Clinton’s timing seems carefully planned as the Supreme Court will consider two high-profile cases on gay marriage next week.
