The tradition of having a family dog in the White House goes all the way back to George Washington, and while the media has reported extensively on the Obama’s Portuguese Water Dog, Bo, and the passing of poor Barney, George W. Bush’s trusted canine companion, we rarely hear about the felines of the White House.
Behold, Presidents and Cats! Happy Purr-zidents Day!
President Barack Obama
President Obama doesn’t actually have a cat, but here he is with British Prime Minister David Cameron’s housecat, Larry, during a visit to London last month.
President George W. Bush
We have no idea whose cat this is, but it obviously doesn’t fancy W. It’s not that 43 doesn’t like felines, though. President George W. Bush and his wife Laura Bush owned a black cat named India during their time in the White House. However there are no pictures of the first couple and that cat on the Internet.
The former first couple recently adopted a new cat–Bob–who was found on the Bush’s ranch.
President Bill Clinton
President Bill Clinton with his trusty sidekick, Socks. Socks was also know for filling in for White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers on occasion.
President George H. W. Bush
President George H. W. Bush didn’t own a cat while in the White House, but he did have to beat one to get there!
President Ronald Reagan
President Ronald Reagan and his wife owned two tortoiseshell strays cats, named Cleo and Sara.
President Jimmy Carter
President Carter has had some, we’ll say, “bad luck” when it comes to cats. His daughter did have a Siamese cat named Misty Malarky Ying Yang, however.
President Gerald Ford
We couldn’t find any pictures of President Ford with cats, but here’s a consolation prize: his dog, Liberty, with puppies!
The Ford’s did have a Siamese cat named Shan, however, pictured with the President’s daughter below.
President Richard Nixon
There’s no pictures of Richard Nixon with cats per se, but here’s a picture of Nixon as Vice President petting a lion! Talk about bold!
President John F. Kennedy
President Kennedy’s daughter’s (who is dressed up for Halloween in this picture) kitten, who was aptly named Tom Kitten, was removed from office when the President discovered that he was allergic.
President Calvin Coolidge
Here’s President Coolidge’s alley cat, Tiger (or “Tige”). Coolidge had a host of other pets, including “lion cubs, canaries, geese, mockingbirds, a bear, and even a pigmy hippopotamus!”
President Theodore Roosevelt
President Roosevelt had two cats: a polydactyl cat named Slippers and a black cat named Tom Quartz.
President James Garfield
President Garfield didn’t have a cat, but if he did, this is what we hypothesize it would look like.
President Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln is credited as the first President to have a cat in the White House. “Tabby was bought for his son Tad. Lincoln, a cat lover, had several cats and played with them for hours.”
President Martin Van Buren
President Van Buren was gifted a pair of tiger cubs similar to the ones above by the Sultan of Oman. Congress made him to send them to the zoo.
