John Oliver dedicated an in-depth segment of “Last Week Tonight” to expressing his outrage about March Madness.
Specifically, the comedian highlighted the fact that the NCAA tournament, which starts Tuesday, generates over $1 billion in television advertising revenue but that the stars of the tournament aren’t paid a dime because they are “student athletes” and not employees of the competing colleges.
“There is nothing inherently wrong with a sporting tournament making huge amounts of money, but there is something slightly troubling about a billion-dollar sports enterprise where the athletes are not paid a penny,” said Oliver.
