Korean baseball team introduces ‘fanbots’ to fill the stands

Baseball, of all places, is becoming a hub of new technology.

Earlier this July, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game introduced self-serve beer machines. Now, there’s the “fanbot.”

Introduced by the Hanwha Eagles of the Korean Professional Baseball League, the “fanbot” allows fans the opportunity to be a part of the stadium atmosphere from the comfort of their own couch.

The Hanwha Eagles have dedicated an entire section in their stadium to the “fanbots,” which are draped in an Eagles jersey and hat. The “fanbot” includes a sign in which fans will control through the internet. “The Today Show” reports the “fanbots” will even be able to participate in The Wave. Fans can have their own face superimposed on the “fanbot” as well.

According to BBC, the Hanwha Eagles have lost over 400 games in the past five years. While the “fanbot” is cutting edge technology, it also allows ardent fans of the struggling team some anonymity.
