Mizzou student VP: “Tired of hearing that 1st Amendment rights protect students”

Student protesters at Mizzou care more about their own concerns about “safe spaces” than they do about that pesky First Amendment. As the Blaze puts it though, at least when “Asked to Respond to First Amendment Concerns on Campus, University of Missouri Student VP Answers with Stunning Honesty.”

On Wednesday night, Brenda Smith-Lezama, vice president of the Missouri Students Association, spoke with MSNBC. When she was asked about concerns to do with universities becoming “places of censor and prohibition,” Smith-Lezama answered with what seems to have become the norm for liberal college students nowadays:

I personally am tired of hearing that First Amendment rights protect students when they are creating a hostile and unsafe learning environment for myself and for other students here. I think that it’s important for us to create that distinction and create a space where we can all learn from one another and start to create a place of healing rather than a place where we are experiencing a lot of hate like we have in the past.

She also had a warning for student journalists when she said “you cannot approach these situations with hostility and anger as it only escalates the situation.”

The statements of Smith-Lezama would be laughable if not dealing with the issues of free speech and having to worry about an expensive education disrupted by walkouts. The protesters may very well be creating such an environment themselves, especially when arming to protect their “safe place.”

Clearly to these students their demands and concerns trump all, even the Constitution. To refer to out founding documents in such a way comes as a shock to many. Unfortunately, Smith-Lezama with most likely be cheered on by many of her peers on campus.
