When Bernie Sanders suggested that Hillary Clinton will have more money than him in 2016, he wasn’t kidding.
The Independent senator from Vermont, who will compete with Hillary for the Democratic nomination for president next year, made a grand total of $1,867.42 for two paid speeches and a television appearance during the entire year of 2014, as reports The Hill.
The most lucrative of the three engagements — a spot on a November episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” — earned Sanders a whopping $850, according to financial disclosure reports.
In unbelievable contrast, Hillary Clinton and her husband Bill earned a whopping $25 million delivering paid speeches since the start of 2014.
The Clintons had 104 paid speaking engagements during those 16 months, 51 of which Bill delivered and 53 of which belonged to Hillary.
Despite his inferior financial status, Sanders has urged Clinton and voters not to “underestimate” him.
“We’ve got a long path forward,” Sanders told USA TODAY in advance of officially announcing his presidential campaign. “Most people in America have never heard of Bernie Sanders. More than 90 percent of Americans have heard of Hillary Clinton. … I will absolutely be outspent. But I do believe we have a chance to raise significant amounts of money through small, individual contributions.”
