City erects ‘selfie statue’: The reason will infuriate you [VIDEO]

It’s not uncommon to see people taking selfies just about anywhere and everywhere — but a selfie statue is something different. A statue commemorating two girls taking a selfie is outside the Town Square in Sugar Land, Texas, Digital Trends reported, and residents aren’t happy.

“If you’re in Texas, you can worship at the feet of a statue celebrating selfies,” the headline reads. As selfie statues are being erected, religious symbols outside buildings risk being taken down.

“A divisive activity at the best of times, the selfie statue has attracted plenty of online hate, with local residents taking to social networks to make sure everyone knows how they feel about it. The selfie is often considered to be a vain, egotistical activity, serving no purpose other than self-promotion,” Digital Trends writes.

Some reacted in amusement along with their shock.

Others more so in outrage.

The statue was donated, along with a statue of a man playing a guitar, with the purpose to “enrich the artistic, cultural, educational, and historical character of Sugar Land.”

The statue also received attention on The Today Show.
