During the Fox Business Republican primary debate, front-running candidates Donald Trump, Ben Carson, and Marco Rubio all agreed that they would not raise the minimum wage if elected president.
“Every time we raise the minimum wage, the number of jobless people increases — particularly in the black community,” Carson said.
Sen. Marco Rubio said raising the minimum wage would not work because it would make people more expensive than machines and eliminate jobs.
Rubio said that rather than raising the minimum wage, the best way to jumpstart the economy and create jobs is to “make America the best place in the world to start a business.”
Rubio said another major factor involved in improving the American economy is making higher education easier to access — in particular, by expanding vocational training.
“We need more welders than philosophers,” Rubio said.
