Doubtful that the president’s New Year’s resolution will be to ‘watch more TV’

Say this for the president — he has some seriously good taste in television. And he watches a ton of it. A ton.

The New York Times’ Michael Shear wrote a rundown of Obama’s favorites, and it took a two-page web story to get through all of them. (At least the ones of which we’re aware.)

There’s HBO’s “The Wire,” which as Shear noted depicts the sort of poverty and blighted urban areas that the president mentioned in a December speech on economic mobility.

There are other HBO programs, including “Boardwalk Empire” and a show that depicts the Washington power struggle. Then there’s Netflix’s “House of Cards.” (He lauded HoC in front Netflix’s CEO during a fall meeting of tech leaders.)

Another politically themed choice of the president is Showtime’s “Homeland,” “which offers an eerily familiar mirror to the president’s own foreign policy adventures,” Shear writes.

The author names nine shows in all, and that doesn’t include “SportsCenter,” on which Obama has been featured for his NCAA tournament bracket expertise. Get the full story here.

It’s unclear how the president’s TV viewing habits compare to those of other Americans in terms of number of shows watched; an initial effort to nab such data from Nielsen proved unsuccessful. However, there are figures on how many hours individuals spend in front of the telly — and as you might expect, it’s a lot.

What about you? Do you consume more television than the president? Weigh in below.
