More than one-third of the U.S. currently lives in a jurisdiction that obstructs federal immigration law and has a “sanctuary” immigration policy, the same kind many say led to the death of Kate Steinle.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, more than 340 jurisdictions currently ignore detainers presented by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This obfuscation of federal law allows thousands of illegal alien criminals to be released into the general public.
Red Alert Politics calculated that more than 106.8 million Americans–33 percent of the entire population–lives in those 340 municipalities.
They include the entire states of California, Colorado, Connecticut, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Rhode Island as well as major cities including Boston, Mass., New York, N.Y., Miami, Fla., Las Vegas, Nev., Chicago, Ill., Philadelphia, Penn., Seattle, Wash., Austin, Texas, and Baltimore, Md.
Rural counties in Oregon, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Washington, and New York also ignore ICE detainers.
San Francisco ignored ICE agents when they asked the city to hold Steinle’s murderer who had been arrested dozens of times and deported five times. Nonetheless, they let him go and just weeks later he went on to kill the young woman.
The fact that one-third of the American population lives in a “sanctuary” jurisdiction means there are potentially thousands more tragic stories like Steinle’s in the making. “Sanctuary” cities provide no sanctuary or peace of mind to American citizens.
Center for Immigration Studies provides an interactive map to show all the counties and cities where local governments ignore federal immigration law.
