Several people in the twittesphere reported that President Barack Obama had sent them a direct twitter message asking for their support and votes in the upcoming election, according to Mashable.
“Use your Twitter influence to help get out the vote,” one Obama tweet sent from Obama2012 read. “Follow, re-tweet @Obama2012 and join the team.”

The direct messages sent receivers to a website where they could register their Twitter account with the Obama team.
“Because you’ve got the ears of a lot of people on Twitter, you’re in a great place to help turnout the vote for President Obama,” the page reads. “Here’s all you need to do to help get information out about voter registration, polling places, and other details about election day.”
Reporters have also received tweets from @BarackObama and @MichelleObama.
This is the first time, that we are aware of, that any campaign has resorted to using direct messaging techniques to promote their campaign and turn out voters.
Especially because, according to Salon, Twitter only permits you to send out 250 direct messages a day from each account. Which means that even if the Obama campaign is using 3 different Obama accounts, Michelle’s account, and maybe even Joe Biden’s account, they are only going to reach a maximum of 9000 people from now until the election.
Is it worth it? Or is it a desperate shot in the dark to pull out all the stops in order to win this election?
So far the Mitt Romney campaign has not said whether or not they are doing the same.
