Fox News journalist John Stossel made a stop on his book tour Monday at Marquette University, explaining why the government fails us in our lives, but individuals succeed. Young America’s Foundation hosted the event, a student-driven organization bringing conservative views to American campuses around the country.
“We judge politicians by their attentions; we should judge them by their inability to see the repeated unintended consequences of their arrogance,” said Stossel to a packed room of enthusiastic college students.
He went on to say, “Economic freedom that’s the key; limited government. You need rule of law to protect yourself, but that is about it… Free people, left alone, prosper.”
The quietest part of the night was when Stossel brought up his libertarian views on such issues as gay marriage and legalizing marijuana. Half the crowd was silent when Stossel mentioned he was a lousy conservative. “I think homosexuality is just fine. I think drugs should be legalized.”
After the presentation, he answered questions from a few students who were concerned about the Republican Party and their libertarian views. “I just don’t fit in with today’s Republicans,” said one student in the crowd. Another student said “I want gay people to be able to get married but that is not allowed with conservatives.” Stossel rebutted with politicians like U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (Texas), and fmr. New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson who agree with you, “You are not alone.”
Stossel just released his new book titled, “No They Can’t: Why Government Fails – But Individuals Succeed.” In his book he discusses topics such as education, limited government, inflation, defense cuts and legalizing drugs.
Stossel, who is on a national book tour, visited Bloomington, Minnesota before touching down at Marquette, where he appeared before a crowded room, , hosted this time by the Freedom Foundation. Stossel then went on to Denver and Oakland. For a complete list of cities of where John will be click here.
