Maryland governor claims White House leaked comments on housing immigrant children to ‘discredit’ him

Maybe Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is just misunderstood.

O’Malley made headlines in July for advocating against the deportation of illegal immigrant children while simultaneously asking the White House not to send them to his state.  Now O’Malley, a longtime Obama supporter and fellow Democrat, says his words were spun by the White House.

Appearing on Fusion, O’Malley answered questions Tuesday from host Jorge Ramos about his apparent double standard on the issue.

He defended his earlier remarks by explaining that he was really just looking out for the children and warning the White House not to send the children to a particular part of town where, he said, “some really hateful graffitti was sprayed on buildings.” Rather than insisting that the children be housed in that particular Maryland facility, he said that the White House should be looking for alternative options.

The original report of O’Malley’s comments came to CNN from an anonymous White House source.

“I think sadly that was a spin and a misrepresentation that some at the White House tried to put out in order to discredit the larger point that I was making,” he said.
