The first votes of the 2016 election cycle will be cast in Monday night’s Iowa caucuses — and with the wide field of Republican candidates, the results are anything but certain.
According to Fox News, 55 percent of Iowa Republicans said they have made up their minds, but 45 percent said they could still be persuaded. Three Drake University students who are currently still undecided joined “The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson” on Monday to discuss which candidates they were most likely to support, and how their opinions about the candidates have changed throughout the campaign so far.
Logan Kentner said he had been a Ted Cruz supporter up until a few weeks ago, when ads saying that Cruz will perpetuate gridlock in Washington caused him concern.
“I don’t know if we need another 4 years of constant gridlock,” he said, “and I don’t know if Republicans or Democrats will be able to work with [Cruz].”
Kasey Clary agreed that Cruz is a good leader, but may not be able to reach across the aisle and get things done.
“I love most of the candidates in the conservative field, aside from one or two,” he said. “But really what’s changed for me is I think ‘Marco-mentum’ is a real thing. People are starting to surge in the polls for Marco. I want to support a candidate that has inspirational rhetoric, that can get things done, maybe work across the aisle…I think Cruz comes off a little bit combative, I really love how he stands on principle…we need somebody who’s willing to do that, but we need somebody who can accomplish things that they set out.”
