Massachusetts students win the right to hold an American-themed school dance

Miley Cyrus would be proud of these freedom fighters.

High school students in Massachusetts successfully fought their hypersensitive administration over a patriotic-themed school dance this week.

Lexington High School administrators tried to cancel an “American Pride” dance, even though the student body overwhelmingly voted for that theme, because they feared it was not inclusive enough, Fox News reported. They suggested a “National Pride” dance in its place.

“(It’s) a lot of hypersensitivity to being politically correct,” one student told local news station WHDH.

“People consider America to be a melting pot,” another student said. “So the fact that it was even considered offensive is what people are a little surprised about.”

Principal Laura Lasa told Fox that they didn’t cancel the dance, but that they pushed it back so they could “dialogue” with students about inclusivity.

“We were in a conversation with the kids about how the theme would be presented so that we could make sure that it was inclusive to all students,” Lasa said. “They took that as being told they could not.”

On Monday, the administration announced that they would allow the students to continue with the American theme and even allow them to wear red, white, and blue.
