An Obama 2012 campaign email sent out late Wednesday evening claims GOP Presidential nominee Mitt Romney is running a “disturbing hate campaign” and ties him to comments made by conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh.
The fundraising email sent by Deputy Campaign Manager Julianna Smoot insinuates that Limbaugh is somehow involved in Romney’s campaign as a scheme to encourage donations to President Obama’s reelection campaign.
“Rush isn’t some loose cannon — he’s apparently right in line with the Romney campaign’s talking points,” the email says.
The Obama campaign connects Limbaugh to the Romney campaign because “Mitt Romney says he finds it ‘hard to disagree with Rush Limbaugh.’ ”
The email also includes the latest “nutty” quote from Limbaugh: “I think it can now be said, without equivocation — without equivocation — that this man hates this country. He is trying — Barack Obama is trying — to dismantle, brick by brick, the American dream.”
It also calls out Romney surrogate and former Republican Governor of New Hampshire John Sununu for calling the White House “dumb” and saying on an official Romney call with reporters that, “I wish this president would learn how to be an American.”
The Obama campaign suggests that Rush Limbaugh is in some way working for the Romney campaign based on his statement Obama hates America and therefore the Romney campaign is running a “disturbing hate campaign” (before strategically asking for donations of $3 or more to the Obama campaign).
Aside from the fact that the Romney campaign is not to our knowledge working with Rush Limbaugh in any way, the quote included in the email claiming that Romney finds it “hard to disagree with Rush Limbaugh” is taken entirely out of context by the Obama campaign.
In an interview with Romney Newsmax.tv correspondent Ashley Martella quotes Rush as saying that Romney made a mistake in endorsing McCain in his 2010 U.S. reelection campaign because, “The era of McCain is over.”
To that Romney said, “I find it hard to disagree with Rush Limbaugh on topics, but on this one I do,” before listing off the reasons he was supporting McCain.
The Obama campaign email makes it seem as if Romney’s statement were made recently in defense of Limbaugh. In actuality, not only was it unrelated to Rush’s comments about Obama, Romney was disagreeing with Rush in the statement for criticizing him.
And the Obama campaign claims that Romney’s the one running the disturbing campaign.
