Islamic Speaker: Moderate Muslims believe in killing gays

In wake of the Orlando shooting, a 2013 video of an Islamic speaker talking about how killing gays is a belief held by many moderate Muslims has resurfaced.

Fahed Qureshi, a Muslim man from Norway who founded a Muslim organization called Islam Net, complained that the mainstream media implies that only extremists in the Muslim community believe in the death penalty for homosexuals and the subjugation of women. Qureshi argued that moderate Muslims also hold those views.

“I always try to tell them that….these are general views that every Muslim actually has….every Muslim believes in these things,” Qureshi said.

In the video, Qureshi asks the Muslim crowd if they agree with things taught in the Quran like gender segregation and stoning women for adultery. Almost every member of the audience raises their hand. To prove his point that this audience doesn’t comprise Muslim extremists, Qureshi then asks his audience if they attend “normal Sunni mosques in Norway.” Again, almost everyone in the audience raises their hand. Through this, Qureshi proves his belief that moderate Muslims hold the same views as Muslim extremists regarding homosexuals and women, and these views are based on things taught in the Quran.

“What are the politicians going to say now? What is the media going to say now? That we are all extremists? That we are all radicals? That we need to deport all of us from this country?” Qureshi asked.

The killer in the Orlando shooting, Omar Mateen, was discovered to have held many homophobic views. The Orlando shooting has led many people to question how people on the left can sympathize with the LGBT community while also sympathizing with Muslim people and their beliefs.
