Father’s Common Core check is trending

One dad’s creative way to express frustration with the Common Core curriculum at Millridge Elementary School has gone viral.

BuzzFeed highlighted the check Doug Hermann wrote out to the elementary school in Common Core standards, which would have made it nearly impossible for the bank teller to cash. “We salute you,” wrote BuzzFeed.

Hermann shared a picture of the check on his Facebook. The post has been shared over 26,000 times.

Wrote a check to Melridge Elementary using common core numbers. I wonder if they’ll take it? #YouFigureItOutPosted by Doug Herrmann on Wednesday, September 16, 2015

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported however that the check was never actually sent, and was meant as a joke. They pointed out various examples of media outlets which “fell for a misleading Facebook post.”

In response to realizing the check had “officially gone viral,” Hermann pointed out that he “didn’t actually send the check in. It was just a slam on common core.” He also later wrote that he was “social media exhausted” and “was just making a “funny” with the check.”

Regardless that the check was never actually sent, it is still newsworthy how Hermann was able to draw the amount of attention he did about Common Core’s confusing standards.
