Millennials might pay a bit too much attention to their smartphones on occasion, but this 33-year-old French man took cellphone obsession to a whole new level.
An unnamed French man was recently thrown in jail for texting and calling an ex-girlfriend 21,807 times, reports The Guardian. More specifically, he averaged more than 73 phone calls daily for an extensive time period.
The individual was reportedly ordering the woman via phone to express her gratitude toward him — or at least pay him — for fixing their apartment. He was subsequently handed down a 10-month sentence and a substantial fine of nearly $1,300.
In addition to the jail time and fine, he must receive psychiatric treatment and is barred from having contact with the ex-girlfriend he made his target. The individual has a history of depression.
“At the time, my logic was that until she returns the money … or at least says thank you, I would not stop the calls,” the anonymous individual explained to a French court.
Musing on his potential career and schooling opportunities in the future, the man admitted he has a “passion for writing.”
Perhaps he discovered that passion with all that texting.
When reflecting on his cellular harassment, the French man revealed wisely, “I tell myself, with hindsight, that it was stupid.”
