Megaupload boss Kim Dotcom has released a song on YouTube called “Mr. President” criticizing President Obama and discouraging his audience from voting for Obama in the upcoming election. In the song, Dotcom accuses the President of intervening on Internet freedom and declares that “the government is killing innovation.”
Dotcom has been accused of masterminding a huge online piracy business, and he is currently free on bail in New Zealand while the United States works toward extraditing him for copyright theft.
In the song, Dotcom compares himself to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “I have a dream, like Dr. King. This is the time to stand up and fight. By any means if we don’t do anything, they will just blame it on the copyright.” The video accompanying the song features some footage of the 1960’s civil rights protests, interspersed with images of recent Occupy movement protests.
Later in the video, Dotcom asks some pressing questions of President Obama regarding freedom and his promise of “change” – questions such as, “What about free speech, Mr. President? What happened to change Mr. President? Are you pleading the fifth, Mr. President? Are you going to fix this, Mr. President?”
Dotcom urges his supporters to unite and fight for their freedom. He sings, “We must oppose, don’t vote for those who want to take us back in time. We must expose people who chose to turn innovation into crime.”
The video closes with Dotcom encouraging his listeners to share the video by way of Twitter, Facebook, and other social media outlets. The song’s companion website, www.kim.com, displays a countdown to the November presidential election and the question, “if Megaupload.com is not back online by November 1st will you vote for Obama?”
