Progressive group calls for free four-year college degrees

Because having the taxpayers fund “free”community college to the tune of $60 billion apparently isn’t enough, progressive groups are crying for more.

The Progressive Campaign Change Committee, Democracy for America, and the liberal Daily Kos website are all hoping that President Obama’s proposal to offer two free years of community college is just a start and that the proposal will lead to cost-free four-year public colleges.

The groups all sent out petitions this week asking their members to support Obama’s plan and urge him to go further, according to The Hill.

“We support free community college as a first step toward debt-free college at all public institutions of higher learning. This is the kind of big idea that Americans are crying out for and need to see more of from Democrats. If you fight, we will fight alongside you,” the PCCC and Daily Kos petition states.

Democracy for America made it about future elections.

“If Democrats are going to win in 2016, they need to propose bold solutions to the economic problems facing most Americans,” Democracy for America said in an email its supporters.

“President Obama’s free community college plan does exactly that and changes the conversation about college affordability. Now it’s time for Democrats to expand the fight to making all public universities free — and eliminating the existing student loan debt that is hurting so many families.”

But federal involvement comes with its own set of problems, not to mention that it would simply shift the burden of the cost of education onto the taxpayers.

When will people learn that nothing is ever really free?
