Uber now bans both drivers and passengers from carrying guns

Months after an Uber driver used his concealed handgun to defend innocent passersby from a would-be shooter, Uber has revised its policies and banned all drivers and passengers from carrying guns.

The New Republic flagged the change on the company’s website, which now prohibits guns “to ensure that everyone using the Uber digital platform…feels safe and comfortable using the service”:

According to the AP, the rules have been in effect since June 10.

Uber representative Matt McKenna told TNR in an email:

We have adopted a no-firearms policy to ensure that both riders and drivers feel safe and comfortable on the platform. We made this policy change after assessing existing policies and carefully reviewing recent feedback from both riders and driver-partners.

Uber competitor Lyft already bans guns.

In April, a 47-year-old Chicago Uber driver defended several people from a 22-year-old shooter. After the shooter opened fire, the driver fired six shots and incapacitated him. No one else was injured.
