Despite growing public opposition to the United States intervening in Syria, one group has found the best reason the American people should support such action — because President Barack Obama says so.
The Second City Network, an improv-based sketch comedy theater, took Organizing for Action to task in a new satirical PSA encouraging the American people to donate to a Kickstarter campaign to fund a war in Syria. Called Help Kickstart World War III, the campaign — backed by the Americans for Whatever Barack Obama Wants Did You Know He’s Friends with Jay-Z — calls on Obama supporters to help raise $1.6 trillion on behalf of the U.S. government.
“Our President can’t launch into another war without you,” an actor in the sketch says. “And remember, when we voted for him in 2008 and 2012, we promised to support him no matter what.”
The actors continue, describing World War III as a progressive war President Obama deems important — so it must be. Such a war, they say, will put the “liberal” in “neo-liberal” and feature all things Democrats love, like organic, grass-fed bombs, hybrid Prius tanks and drones that play the Lumineers while they attack.
“World War III will also be the most social media-focused war ever,” an actress says. “It’ll be all over Twitter, Facebook, Vine, Pinterest and whatever replaces Pinterest. And I mean, just think of all the hilarious GIFs we can make of cats reacting to their owners homes being obliterated.”
Donating to the Help Kickstart World War III campaign offers no shortage of rewards, too. Forking over $10 gets supporters a shout-out on social media, and a $25 donation lands them a piece of rubble from a war-town Middle Eastern country kissed by Sen. Lindsey Graham.
“So help us reach our goal of reaching $1.6 trillion so we can make World War III a reality,” an actor says in closing. “Why? Because Obama.”
As President Obama prepares for an impending intervention in Syria — the video’s World War III — he has been met with growing skepticism from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle as to whether or not an invasion is necessary. The President spent the week reaching out to both Republicans and Democrats in an effort to sway them to vote for the resolution allowing for an intervention, but a potential diplomatic solution presented by Russian President Vladimir Putin delayed the vote.
