The era of the pot scandal is over. These days, Bill Maher observed on his Friday show, when a politician is asked whether they’ve ever smoked pot, “The answer is always ‘yes,’ and nobody cares.”
“When even Ted Cruz cops to it…” he joked.
But Maher did have some biting commentary for all the presidential candidates, past and future, who have admitted to smoking marijuana while continuing to advocate for harsh sentencing laws. They all eventually come up with the same excuses—I was young and foolish, it was a mistake.
“Oh, please, the mistake was stopping,” Maher cracked. “But don’t all these guys—Clinton, Jeb, W., Obama—don’t they all owe a debt to the 40,000 unlucky Americans currently in jail for the exact same crime?”
Maher especially lit into Jeb Bush, who has dismissed his own bad behavior at boarding school by calling himself “a cynical little turd at a cynical school.” Bush has a record of taking a harsh stance on drug abuse—except, Maher charged, when it comes to his own daughter, who has a history of drug problems. “That sounds like something a cynical turd would do,” Maher remarked.
He then called on President Obama to have another policy “evolution,” as he had on gay marriage, and grant pardons to non-violent drug offenders.
